What an Enemy Telegraph Promises – and What It Is Allowed to Hide

A telegraph is a contract. When an enemy begins an attack animation, raises a weapon, or changes posture, it makes a promise to the player about the nature, timing, and direction of the coming threat. The quality of a combat system depends heavily on how honestly that promise is kept and on what the design is still allowed to conceal after the promise has been made.

Players rarely articulate the contract in formal terms. They feel it in the difference between two kinds of death. In the first, the player sees the wind-up, understands the attack, and simply fails to execute the correct response in time. The death feels earned. In the second, the player sees a wind-up that appeared to indicate one thing and is then hit by something that violates the expected timing, range, or follow-up. The death feels like a broken agreement.

The second sensation is more corrosive. It does not only cost a life. It weakens the player’s willingness to trust the next telegraph.

Trust as a Combat Resource

Every clear, honest telegraph deposits a small amount of trust. Every late, ambiguous, or contradictory cue withdraws it. When the balance stays positive, players lean into the fight. When it turns negative, they begin to play more tentatively or to look outside the game for information the telegraphs failed to supply.

The Suspected Machinery

Several design variables determine what a telegraph is allowed to promise and what it may still hide.

Early Versus Late Information

Some attacks declare their full intention in the first frames: stance, direction, approximate speed, and likely recovery. Others reveal only that “an attack is coming” and withhold critical details until the hitbox is nearly active. The later the decisive information arrives, the less the telegraph functions as a true warning and the more it functions as a formal courtesy.

Consistency of Visual Language

If a raised arm always precedes a horizontal slash, and a dropped shoulder always precedes a thrust, the player can build a reliable internal dictionary. When the same posture can lead to multiple different attacks with different timings, the dictionary loses value. Consistency is what allows a telegraph to transfer knowledge from one encounter to the next.

Secondary Cues and Redundancy

Audio, particle effects, camera movement, and controller feedback can reinforce or contradict the primary animation. Redundant cues increase the chance that the player receives the message even under stress or visual clutter. Contradictory cues create noise. The strongest telegraphs tend to align multiple channels toward the same prediction.

Legal Concealment After the Promise

Not every detail must be shown. Tracking strength, exact active-frame length, and certain late cancel options are often left partially hidden. The design question is whether the hidden elements remain within the bounds of the original promise or whether they quietly expand the attack beyond what the telegraph appeared to authorize. The former is layered depth. The latter is a breach.

The Field Test

I examined telegraphs across a range of recent action RPGs and soulslike combat systems on PC, focusing on the interval between first readable cue and the arrival of the hitbox.

  • Catalogued the information actually available in the first third of each startup animation.

  • Noted which critical properties (direction, range band, speed class, follow-up potential) were still ambiguous at that point.

  • Compared death reactions after clearly telegraphed attacks versus attacks whose decisive information arrived late.

  • Tracked whether my own trust in a given enemy’s language increased or decreased across repeated attempts.

All observations were drawn from controlled play and frame-timed review. Exact internal data remained inaccessible. The limitation is acknowledged; the player-facing information available at each moment is still measurable and consistent.

Observable Patterns

Attacks that players consistently described as fair almost always delivered direction and approximate speed class early, then used later frames only to refine timing or tracking within the expected bounds. Attacks that generated repeated complaints of “bullshit” or “I couldn’t read it” frequently withheld direction or speed class until late in the startup, or introduced a follow-up that the initial posture had given no reason to expect. The absolute length of the startup mattered less than how much usable information it actually contained.

The Competing Explanation

One alternative is that the entire problem is player skill and attention. A sufficiently practiced player can read even sparse telegraphs, and complaints simply reflect insufficient exposure. Practice is powerful. Yet the distribution of trust failures is not uniform. Certain enemies and certain attacks produce the same reports across widely different skill levels. The shared friction points to properties of the telegraph itself.

A second alternative is that mystery and variability are necessary to keep combat from becoming trivial. If every attack is fully legible from the first frame, the argument goes, the fight becomes a memorization exercise. This concern is real. The solution, however, is not to break the initial promise. It is to layer additional complexity after the core contract has been honored—through delayed follow-ups that are themselves telegraphed, through positional variation, or through resource states that the player can learn to track. Depth does not require deception.

The Conclusion

An enemy telegraph promises the player a usable prediction. It is allowed to hide refinements, secondary threats, and exact numerical values. It is not allowed to hide the fundamental character of the attack until the moment of contact, nor to expand that character beyond what the early cues made reasonable to expect.

When the contract is kept, failure remains informative. The player knows what was missed and can adjust. When the contract is broken, failure becomes noise. The player cannot tell whether the correct response was possible, and trust in the entire language of the combat system erodes.

The difference is visible in a few frames of animation and audible in a few frames of sound. Those frames decide whether the next death teaches or merely punishes. A combat system that respects the difference can remain demanding for a very long time. A system that ignores it eventually teaches players to stop believing what they see.
