Rather than choosing between endless emptiness and instant menu-hopping, designers must carefully balance route engagement to keep large worlds feeling present and memorable.

Open-world games constantly negotiate with the player’s sense of time. Fast travel compresses distance into a loading screen. Empty roads ask the player to spend real minutes moving through space that contains little new information. Both options reshape the internal clock that tells a player whether the world still feels worth inhabiting. The design question is not whether to include either system. It is how each one trains the player to value, or discount, the time between objectives.

The Sensation Players Report

After long stretches of forced traversal across sparse terrain, many players report a specific fatigue: the world begins to feel larger than their attention can comfortably hold. Fast travel removes that fatigue at once, yet repeated use often produces a second, quieter complaint—the world starts to feel like a collection of disconnected points rather than a continuous place. Players describe the first sensation as “empty” or “padding.” They describe the second as “disconnected” or “like a menu with scenery.”

Both complaints are about time. One is about time that feels wasted. The other is about time that was never allowed to accumulate into presence.

Two Ways Time Can Thin Out

The decision to open the map and skip space is shaped by how much friction the game attaches to the act. Zero-cost, instant fast travel makes the choice almost automatic once distances grow. Cooldowns, resource costs, or limited unlock points keep some traversal mandatory. The presence or absence of that friction decides how quickly the player’s internal map collapses into a network of icons.

Arrival and Departure Framing

How a player enters and leaves a location affects whether the intervening space feels real. A fast-travel arrival that places the character in a quiet, prepared spot with a short settling animation preserves a fragment of presence. An arrival that simply drops the character into combat or a loading-screen abruptness reinforces the sense that space is optional. The same is true in reverse when leaving.

The Player’s Evolving Tolerance

Early in a game, players often accept longer walks because the world is still novel. Later, the same distances feel longer because the informational return has diminished. The internal clock is not fixed. It recalibrates against accumulated experience. Design that ignores this recalibration will eventually be experienced as either padding or disconnection.

The Field Test

I compared traversal behavior across several large open-world titles on PC, focusing on the mid-to-late game when the map is largely unlocked and novelty has declined.

  • Timed representative journeys of similar map distance with and without fast travel.

  • Noted the point at which the impulse to open the map became stronger than the impulse to continue moving.

  • Observed how arrival framing and route density altered the willingness to travel the same distance again.

  • Tracked subjective sense of “world coherence” after sessions dominated by fast travel versus sessions that forced more ground movement.

All observations came from controlled play and session notes. Exact engine streaming distances and load times vary by hardware; the qualitative patterns in attention and decision-making remained stable.

Observable Patterns

When routes offered frequent low-level points of interest, players tolerated longer continuous travel before reaching for the map. When routes were sparse, the same players opened the map earlier and reported greater later disconnection. Games that attached even mild costs to fast travel preserved more continuous movement late into the playthrough. Games that made fast travel free and ubiquitous saw the internal map flatten sooner.

The Competing Explanation

One alternative is that empty roads are simply a content problem and fast travel is the pragmatic solution. Under this view, the correct response to sparse terrain is to let the player skip it. The diagnosis is partly correct: low information density is a content and layout issue. The solution, however, is incomplete. Unlimited skipping does not fix the density problem; it only prevents the player from having to experience it. The cost is the gradual erosion of the world as a continuous place.

A second alternative is that players always prefer efficiency and that any mandatory traversal is outdated design. Efficiency is a real preference. Yet many players also report a lasting attachment to worlds they were required to cross under their own power, even when parts of those crossings were imperfect. The internal clock appears to value a certain amount of earned distance. Removing all of it removes one of the ways a place becomes memorable.

The Conclusion

Fast travel and empty roads are two opposing pressures on the same resource: the player’s willingness to keep time flowing inside the world. Empty roads ask for more time than the available information can justify. Fast travel deletes time so efficiently that the world risks becoming a set of nodes. The healthier middle ground is not the absence of either system. It is the deliberate management of information density on routes, the calibrated friction of skipping those routes, and arrival framing that still treats space as real.

The player’s internal clock is always running. It records both the minutes spent moving through emptiness and the minutes that were never allowed to exist. Design that ignores either entry will eventually feel as though time itself has been poorly spent. Design that respects both can keep a large world feeling present long after the map has been filled in.
